We started doing a little project because it is fall and “supposed to be getting cooler” although this is the warmest winter that I have been here. We have recently purchased coconuts at our local open-air market and after eating the meat and drinking the milk I did not want to waste those beautiful shells, so I decided that it would be fun to make some coconut shell buttons for my various crochet and knit creations. Adan suggested that we call the buttons COCOBUTTS and sell them (smart little dude). We are very environmentally conscious so I think that using our used coconut shells in this manner was a great idea. Make sure that if you decide to make your own coconut shell “stuff” that you wear safety glasses, simply because dust and small particles get EVERYWHERE. We used my trusty little DREMEL (Christmas present) and we sanded the shell piece and edges down using the coarsest sanding attachment and finally moving down the scale to the finer attachments, and lastly polishing the piece. As you can see the finished product is adorable, I cant wait to pair it with some spun Chilean wool!
Do yourself a favor, if you are a crafty little vixen, BUY A DREMEL. Seriously the best present ever! Although I could do with a jigsaw very soon.
